PRViously on Crypto: Hacker on Twitter promotes “Elon Musk” Dogecoin scam, Vitalik Buterin impersonator pulls off crypto scams

Hacked Twitter Account of Indian Medical Association Promotes “Elon Musk” Dogecoin Scam

Some Elon Musk impersonators hacked the official Twitter account of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to promote a bitcoin giveaway fraud.

The verified account’s handle was momentarily changed to that of the centibillionaire.

Fraudsters claimed to be able to give away up to 5,000 Bitcoin (BTC), 100,000 Ethereum (ETH), and 100 million Dogecoin (DOGE).

Dr. Sahajanand Prasad Singh, who was elected President-Elect of the IMA in December, believes the perpetrators must face “consequences” and must face “severe action.”

In addition, the attack impacted the accounts of Deshi Mahila Bank and the Indian Council of World Affairs (a significant think tank).

Although the accounts have been recovered, the situation is still being examined. Scammers reportedly gained access to them by duping their owners into clicking on a malicious link.

The Indian Prime Minister’s official Twitter account was hacked in early December in order to promote a Bitcoin giveaway hoax to a massive 73.4 million followers. The tweets were removed by the social media giant in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office.

Musk, the world’s richest man, has long been a target of bitcoin fraudsters. The billionaire has derided cryptocurrency fraudsters. The billionaire himself was a victim of the largest Twitter breach in the platform’s history in 2020.

The Federal Trade Commission claimed in May that customers had lost more than $2 million as a result of Musk giveaway frauds.

Someone Allegedly Impersonates Vitalik Buterin on Instagram, Pulling Off Crypto Scams

A Reddit member going by the Moniker Nwa1g posted a message claiming to have discovered a fraudster on Instagram impersonating Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

This individual or group of people is accused of “roping followers into traditional crypto schemes.”

Vitalik Buterin impersonated on Instagram

A Redditor described the “extremely hazardous horrible fraud” and begged the Ethereum community to upvote his post in order to have something done about it.

According to him, Vitalik Buterin does not have an official Instagram account, thus the accused scammer is exploiting that by impersonating Vitalik’s Twitter handle @vitalik.eth. This account has a total of 643,000 followers.

Nwa1g further stated that because Buterin does not have an official account on that social media network, it is hard to denounce the impostor. However, there is a @buterin official Instagram account with 576,000 followers.

According to the Redditor, the bogus account is situated in Israel and uploads “harmless sponsor advertising on images with Vitalik.” Surprisingly, the Reddit user claims that this account has been active on Instagram for more than two years — since 2019.

“They are robbing people.”

Based on Nwa1g, the people behind the fraudulent account persuade their followers to send them direct messages (thinking that they are writing to Vitalik Buterin), and this is when they become victims of classic cryptocurrency scams — they send their seed phrases or coins to these scammers expecting to receive 3x cryptocurrency in return. Users are also apparently receiving fraudulent links in DMs from this account.

Multiple “Vitalik Buterin” accounts on Instagram

A quick Instagram search reveals that there are over a dozen “Vitalik Buterin” Instagram profiles, several of which are labeled “Vitalik Biterin official.”
